I did a very brave thing today.

I took my three kids, ages 2, 5 & 8, back to school shopping by myself.  We hit Old Navy and got a pile of $3 t-shirts for my middle daughter and a fair number of them for my 2nd grade son.  [I also got a cute aqua skirt for myself and our sweet toddler took home an Elmo tee for good measure.]

Then we headed over to Woodland Mall.  My main goal was to buy gym shoes.  We’re going to be traveling a lot in August and I know from past experience that if I wait much longer there will be slim pickings and not much to be had in the deal department.

We’ve always done the velcro closures, but this year I am determined that my little cherubs will learn how to tie their shoes.  We lucked out and found both kids a pair at Sears that they liked and now they have 30 days to learn how to tie them themselves.  {Update: we’ve been home for 3 hours and my 8 year old has already figured out how to tie a bow!}

After a stop off for pretzels, we went to JC Penney, where an employee approached me and asked me if I knew about their free haircuts for kids in August?  I didn’t, so she told me the details.

Basically, JCP is giving kids K-6th grade free back-to-school haircuts for the entire month of August.  The only catch is that it is by appointment only.  Here are some of the JCP stores that are near Grand Rapids:
