Video & GIVEAWAY! Potting up Pretty Planters

This contest is now closed.  Congratulations Angie C. !
Welcome!  Hope you’re ready to come on over, because you’re invited to a garden party in my backyard.  And I’ll let you in on two great things about this party:

  1. You can come in your pajamas because it’s a virtual party and
  2. I’m giving one lucky party guest a $25 Koetsiers Greenhouse gift card.

But first, let me share a little background on my yard, where [in the video] I’ll show you how to pot up some pretty planters and use annuals in the yard to brighten things up.

Almost four years ago, my family and I moved into our current home.  We moved in the dead of winter, so I couldn’t take a single one of my beloved plants with us.  (Sigh.)  To add insult to injury, our new house had minimal landscaping.

see for yourself…

Over the last few years we did a lot of work on the yard – and to save money, we did most of it ourselves.  Our accomplishments include my husband driving a bulldozer, taking out 43 trees, and building a 50 foot long rock wall in the backyard.  But it was worth the wait and the work.  Now, we’ve finally got the basic framework of our yard in place.

what a difference!

We’re all at different stages in our gardening lives.  I grew up with parents in the nursery business and my kids are old enough to be outside with me for extended periods of time, so I can stay out and dig in the garden.  But some of our readers are nursing babies right now, or have no idea where to start when it comes to plants.  It’s all okay.  Start small.  Gardens, like kids, are works-in-progress.  They grow and change, but they are never done.

With that, I invite you to click the play button below and enter my garden party.  I’ll share some simple tips on potting up a pretty planter and a few fool-proof tips on how to plant annuals.  Plus, I’ll let you know how you could win a $25 gift certificate to Koetsiers greenhouse.

The winner of the $25 gift certificate will be announced on the next GRKids Grows on May 29.

Thanks for stopping by!

I would buy some really pretty plants to dress up our backyard because this is the first year since we have lived here (in 4 years) that I can finally decorate our back yard! We are renovating it this year and I don’t have any colorful plants or anything pretty to look at in my back yard. I would love to plant beautiful flowers back there for all of us to enjoy during the warm months. Thanks!

First — just want to say your yard looks gorgeous! Great before and after pics :) Loved the tip of punching the tags and keeping them on a ring.. thank you! If I won the $25, I would let my daughter pick out some new items for her garden. She does a great job & even helps me weed out my gardens.

  • Jill Damec

I would get a hanging basket. I haven’t been out to buy my annuals and hanging baskets yet. This is the latest I’ve ever been in doing that.

Thanks for the video – love the planter inside a planter trick [wishing I had seen this last week...I always fill the bottom with rocks - nice heavy rocks, lol!]

I cleaned my two small flower beds, I’m sort of a garden newbie. My husband loves it and this year I want to get more involved too.

  • Sharon Apol via Facebook

After planting my plot at the community garden I popped into Ken’s Market for fruit salad fixins and realized I still had very dirty hands! Slightly embarrassing.

  • Heather

I would use this to fill my pots for my front porch!

  • Christine

  • dorothy

I would use the gift to purchase annuals for my yard.

  • Elizabeth

Where to start?! Our landscaping is the same as the ‘before’ picture. When we moved into our home two years ago, we tore out seven years worth of neglected overgrowth, and now have a ton of work to do. We should probably start in the front, since then neighbors can see that!

  • Willow Cramer

We just planted a hodgepodge garden with flowers and vegies all mixed together!! It was fun and our kids love watching stuff grow!! We need to pull some bushes in our front yard and plant some new flowers or plants, the bushes need to go they are ugly!!

  • Sally

I would buy some plants and flowers for my back deck of my condo.

    Thanks so very much!!

  • Pamela Kaptein

I have always been afraid of annuals, and have only planted perennials. The way that annuals were presented took away some of the intimidation that I was feeling, and now I would like to give it a try. All season color and bloom sounds like it might be a very welcome change at this house.

  • bonnie

I love to grow tomatos and broccoli.
I love the summer and Blandford nature center

  • Denise Downs

I would use the gift certificate to buy a beautiful hanging basket for my empty shephard’s hook.

  • Ingrid Reineking

I would buy a hanging basket I normally couldn’t afford OR I’d buy some perennials to enjoy year after year :)

  • Melissa

I would buy some perennials to add to our front area to liven up the look from the street and some annuals to let me son plant in the pots he has painted.

  • Suzanne

I would like to try some new annuals I’ve never planted before. I really like that papyrus plant you used as the “thriller” in the first container.

  • Megan

I would buy annuals and hanging baskets!

  • Angie C

I would use the gift certificate to buy some annuals to plant in big planters that I have on my front porch!

  • Kirsten H

I would love to brighen up the deck and yard of my new house. The yard is a mess and I have slowly been working on it. I ve the ideas of some hanging baskets and annuals..

  • Kristi

O love your idea about putting the smaller overturned pot into the big pot. I am absolutely going to sue that one. If I were to win this, I would get some hanging baskets for my front yard. I desperately need some color out there.
