West Michigan Summer Reading Programs

We asked the local public libraries and bookstores in greater Grand Rapids and across West Michigan to share their summer reading programs with us. If you know of others, please leave us a comment!

Many programs offer prizes and rewards for reading. Lots of events are scheduled along the way, too.

We were overwhelmed with the huge amount of programming available across our region. Have fun as you explore libraries new and old!

 

 

Grand Rapids Public Library

The Grand Rapids Public Library challenges all kids in the city under the age of 18 to read. The more levels you complete, the more prizes you win. Competitors can register at www.grpl.org/summerreading starting May 15. May 28-August 31, 2013 at All Grand Rapids Public Library locations

Construction Truck Petting Zoo
Grand Rapids Main Library: Sheldon and Library Streets (Free parking in the Main Library’s parking lot). Explore a petting zoo of real construction trucks. A variety of trucks will be on display. Hands on activities for the whole family! Saturday, June 1, 2013, 10 am – 2 pm

Bugs, Beetles, & Bookworms
Join the Science Alliance for this fast-paced insect safari that makes learning about entomology fun! Learn the body parts of insects by labeling a gigantic eight-foot-long ant and praying mantis. Look through crazy goggles to see the world through a bug’s compound eye. Experience preserved and live insects close up! Dinosaur Encounters
Get up close and personal with dinosaurs! Author and dino expert Janet Riehecky will show more than 40 fossils and museum-quality replicas of real dinosaur bones. See a Tyrannosaur’s tooth, an Iguanodon’s thumb, a Velociraptor’s claw, a five-foot-seven-inch Apatosaurus femur, and even an entire Tyrannosaurus foot. Rock Garden Party
Suspend your disbelief, harness your imagination and enter the garden with SkaterDude. ROCKgarden Party is an interactive, fun, and educational performance about our changing environments. Charlie Kert and Little Fingers Music bring lots of instruments and teach you how to bring the rain by getting you to sing, dance, and drum. Dr. Dirt: The Art of the Soil

Pippin Puppets Present Journey to the Center of the Earth
Dig into a sci-fi classic! Volcanoes! Dinosaurs! Adventures! The Underground Ocean! Join us for this live puppet show that takes us to the center of the earth!  Everyone will receive a take-home dino craft puppet. Animals Under the Surface

Ocean Underworld
What lurks in the great ocean depths? What infamous legends and myths have arisen from beneath the depths of the sea? Discover the creatures of the sea from mermaids to Poseidon! Henna Runes

Steampunk Mousetrap Message Clips
Come test your knowledge or learn more about the subculture of Steampunk as you redesign mouse traps using the Steampunk theme. You’re invited to our epic Flash Mob Dance Party. What skills lurk beneath your surface? Come find out! You can also to use this program to earn community service time. Teen Cemetery Tour
Join the local history staff at the GRPL on a tour of the Fulton Street Cemetery! Discover the many secrets that lurk in the city’s oldest resting place for the dead. Find out why we might never know who is buried in Fulton Street Cemetery. Uncover some of the most famous of GR’s citizens and their stories! Wednesday, August 7 at 2pm- Meet at the Main Library.

GRPL’s Got Talent
Teens, come and show off your talent at this annual event! Singers, dancers, musicians and performance artists of all kinds are welcome to enter for a chance to win prizes. Sign up at any GRPL location by August 9, 2013 for a chance to shine! Thursday, August 15 at 6pm- Main Library.

 

Kent District Library

Last year, Kent District Library had the busiest summer reading program of any public library system in Michigan with 28,914 participants. This year’s Summer Reading @ KDL program runs from Saturday, June 1 to Saturday, August 10.

With activities for babies, kids, teens and adults, Summer Reading @ KDL offers something for everyone: There’s Dig Into Reading for kids birth through grade 5, Beneath the Surface for teens grades 6-12, and Groundbreaking Reads for adults. Our “Experience Summer Online @ KDL” virtual program, Dig Into KDL, will encourage participants to learn not only through reading, but also through seeing, doing and exploring. Read and experience for the chance to win great prizes such as gift cards to nearly 20 different stores, a John Ball Zoo membership, iPods, a NOOK eReader and more!

KDL Gives Back: Old U.S. Flag Collection
Bring old U.S. flags into the library for proper disposal. From Friday, June 14 (Flag Day) through Saturday, July 6, all 18 branches of the Kent District Library will be collecting old United States Flags. In cooperation with local Boy Scout troops, these flags will then be properly disposed of during flag retirement ceremonies. Friday, June 14 – Saturday, July 6

West Michigan Chalk Art Festival
Bringing an explosion of color to downtown Byron Center through the work of talented sidewalk chalk artists! Artists of all ages and levels are invited to participate and compete for awards. Trash & Treasure Sale
Our TNT Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Sand Lake/Nelson Township Library, is held in conjunction with the town-wide garage sales. Signup: in the Children’s Area of the library starting June 10th

Ages: birth through 18 years

Each child receives a reading log to keep track of their reading at home.  When they are halfway to our reading goal, they can bring their log in and receive a prize packet. Upon completion, they receive a Finisher prize packet.

Throughout the summer, we have events going on every weekday:  storytimes, movies,

Pooh’s Corner

2013 Summer Reading Program

Registration for CAMP READ-A-LOT will begin on Tuesday, May 28.  The final day to turn in materials will be Tuesday, September 3. The Camp Read-a-Lot program encourages kids of all ages (infant through teen) to keep reading throughout the summer months.

In addition to rewards and prizes for reading, Pooh’s Corner offers a robust schedule of activities that include our regularly scheduled Story Time (10:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday), plus craft days, game days, author and illustrator events and costume character visits.

A full schedule of summer events will be issued with registration materials beginning May 28.
