Hit the Streets in September!
School is coming, summer is going and September is here to celebrate it all. From festivals and street fairs, to consignment sales, art, art and, well, more art, it’s a month full of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the last bit of warmth before winter begins to call.
In our list of 30 things to enjoy with your family, you’ll find a good mix of events for our babies, our big kids and even ourselves. Follow along, or mix them up…either way you’re guaranteed some great family fun!

Paint the Town in September With Kids – 2017
September 01 – Enjoy polka music, dancing, food and much more at the 2-day Muskegon Polish Festival.
September 02 – It’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Night at the Whitecaps! Stick around after the game and you’ll enjoy fireworks, too.
Sunday, September 03 – Pack a picnic and hop aboard the Grand Lady for a relaxing cruise.
September 04 – Celebrate Labor Day at a parade.
September 05 – We’ve partnered with Koetsier’s Greenhouse to bring back First of Fall. Beginning today, families will enjoy a bumble bee ride, hayride, indoor play area, Barnyard Adventure, Toddler Town, popcorn, cider and donuts for just $18!
September 06 – Enjoy a scoop of frozen custard as you watch classic, hot rod and muscle cars fill the lot for Car Night at Culver’s of Cascade.
September 07 – Head to the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum and enjoy FREE admission to Family Night, thanks to Spartan Nash!
September 08 – Flick’s Family Film Fest kicks off once again, with the showing of Boss Baby!
September 09 – Help hand release over 300 monarch butterflies as they begin their annual fall migration at the John Ball Zoo. Looking for something less delicate? Head to the Monster Truck Throwdown and Fireworks show at the Berlin Raceway.
Sunday, September 10 – Learn the history of apples while enjoying hands on activities, packing production tours, and cider and donut tasting at the Michigan Apple Fest in Sparta.
September 11 – Join local scouting groups and other area community members at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, as they remember 9/11. Admission to the museum is FREE all day.
September 12 – Venture into the seething star, our sun, at the Carr-Fles Planetarium newest production, Solar Superstorms.
September 13 – Shop, sell and save at the Just Between Friends consignment sale, taking place today through Saturday.
September 14 – Check out Artprize’s new Steam Village where you can control robots, watch 3D printer demonstrations and more!
September 15 – Stop by Heartside Park and the Downtown Market to celebrate the Mexican Heritage at the 2017 Mexican Festival! Then grab a blanket and watch the season’s last East Grand Rapids Movie in the Park, Jurassic Park.
September 16 – Kick off the opening of Brain: the World Inside Your Head, with BrainSTEM at the Grand Rapids Public Museum!
Sunday, September 17 – Experience the tranquil ambience and exquisite architecture of the Japanese Teahouse at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.Then tour their Children’s Gardens.
September 18 – Enjoy storytime and hands on kitchen time at the Mary Free Bed YMCA. Today’s Book & Cook: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, is open to kids ages 3-5.
September 19 – Visit the Ada Farmer’s Market and let the little ones explore through their “Kids in the Market” program; there’s something new each week!
September 20 – ArtPrize kicks off today! Enjoy more than 1,300 works of art at 175 venues across three square miles of Grand Rapids.

September 21 – It’s Buck Night at Hudsonville Lanes. Games, shoe rental, pop, hot dogs and fries are just $1 between 8:00- 10:00 pm.
September 22 – While the ghosts and ghouls sleep, families are invited to head out to the New Salem Corn Maze for some friendly daytime fun at the Wurst Festival Ever 2017!
September 23 – Enjoy more Fall Family Fun at Dairy Discovery. Guests will receive a guided educational tour, a craft, lunch and a ‘spooktacular’ straw maze!
Sunday, September 24 – Get outside, and bring the family with you, on a guided themed Sunday Walk at the Wittenbach/Wege Center.
September 25 – Imagine and Create every Monday at the Kent County Recycling Center!
September 26 – Watch PJ Masks Live! Time to Be a Hero, come to life on stage at the DeVos Performance Hall.
September 27 – Are you Digging Dinosaurs? Stop by KDL’s Wyoming Branch for a STEAM-based storytime and special dino fun!
September 28 – Touch and hold baby chicks while listening to Little Peeps Storytime at the Critter Barn.
September 29 – Rediscover the magic of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as the Grand Rapids Symphony brings it to life!
September 30 – The Famous Pumpkin Train returns today. Join a cast of wacky characters on a 14 mile journey and then pick your own pumpkin to bring home from a patch.
