A January to Remember

By now, we would typically have snow covering the ground and plenty of outdoor fun to be had. Without it, finding things to do with the kids in January can be tricky. Despite the lack of fluffy white stuff, Grand Rapids has come through with a great list of things to do.

You’ll find an abundance of indoor recreation, educational opportunities and even a handful Winter Festivals. Below, we’ve listed one for each day of the month. Follow along, or mix them up where you can…either way you’re guaranteed family fun!

Sunday, January 1 – Enjoy hot cocoa and cookies while you paint at The Mud Room’s New Year’s Day PJ Party! You’ll get 10% off your pottery when you wear your pajamas.

January 2 – Visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum for the last few days of Snowflake Break.

January 3 – Catch Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World at Frederik Meijer Gardens in its last week on display. While you’re there, go on a Winter-time Walk through the Children’s Garden.

January 4 – Watch the Grand Rapids Drive take on the Westchester Knicks.

January 5 – Join your local Barnes & Noble in building their in-store LEGO Skyline London and Chicago display!

January 6 – Up for a road trip? Head to downtown Plymouth, Michigan for their world-class Ice Festival!

January 7 – It’s Superhero Night at the Grand Rapids Griffins! Prefer some outdoor fun? Head to Ludington State Park for a Shoe Year’s Hike. Participants can cross-country ski, snowshoe or hike lantern-lit trails, where you’ll warm yourself by the fire with a hot drink.

Sunday, January 8 – Enjoy 10 of Christian music’s best and brightest artists at the Winter Jam Tour Spectacular. Arrive early and kick the party off at the Pre-Jam Party.

January 9 – Catch a flick with your little one in tow at Celebration Cinema South’s Bring the Baby Matinee, taking place every Monday at 11:00 AM.

January 10 – Bring the entire family to swim at Goldfish Swim School during one of their open Family Swim times.

January 11 – Join Ada Township Parks for their monthly Discovery Day. January will help your preschooler explore our “Wonderful Winter” by looking at snowflakes and animal tracks.

January 12 – It’s Family Fun Day at REBOUNDERZ! For just $60 families of 4 can enjoy unlimited jumping, a large pizza and a pitcher of soda between 3:30 and 8:30 PM.

January 13 – Watch as the Master Art Theatre’s Youth Acting Class presents Cinderella, the World’s Favorite Fairy Tale!

January 14 – Witness fearless riders battle in 14 rounds of high-speed, high flying motorcycle racing at the AMSOIL Arenacross competition! Or head to Northview High School for their first ever LEGOmania! Registrations for the event are being accepted through January 6.

Sunday, January 15 – Big kids (8 and up) can get a 2.5 hour luge session, including training, free sliding time and a friendly competition at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex.

January 16 – Enjoy FREE admission to the Muskegon Museum of Art in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. CommUNITY Day.

January 17 – Head to the Tyrone Township KDL for Drive-in Movie: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Kids will get to decorate their own car to sit on while eating popcorn.

January 18 – Take your Little Explorers on a Winter Adventure at the Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland.

January 19 – It’s Family Night at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. Enjoy $1.75 admission and a Dance Party with Lori Teft!

January 20 – Celebrate Inauguration Day at the Gerald R. Ford Museum with FREE admission.

January 21 – Watch as the Grand Rapids Symphony and Grand Rapids Ballet bring the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf to life, in the first Lollipops Concert of 2017! Then bond with your family, while getting active at the Kids and Family Expo. The event features a zip line, ga-ga pit, art wall, face painting, Lego Build and more!

Sunday, January 22 – Celebrate winter in GR while skating around the clock with Griffins players, all weekend long at the Great Skate Winterfest. The event includes sled dogs, figure skating demonstrations, ice sculpting and more and admission is FREE! Then, watch in awe as the Harlem Globetrotters take the floor at the Van Andel Arena.

January 23 – Go ice skating! Leonard Field, Muskegon Winter Sports Complex, Rosa Parks Circle and Griff’s Icehouse all have open hours today.

January 24 – Introduce your little ones (ages 4-6) to the kitchen at the Cooking with Tots family class at the Downtown Market, and create a fun breakfast together.

January 25 – Join players and coaches from the Grand Rapids Drive for a FREE, fun and educational night of basketball at the Kroc Center! Registration is required, as space is limited.

January 26 – Make your way to Grand Haven for Winterfest! This three day event features a Cardboard Sled Race, an Intergalactic Human Sled Race, a Family Dog Pull, a Sleepwalker Run, a Snow Angel Contest and more!

January 27 – Take a little Mitten Trip to Frankenmuth for Zehnder’s annual Snowfest!

January 28 – Start the new year out on an healthy note at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute’s Active Saturdays. Guests can try snowshoes, do family crafts, go on a guided hike and enjoy a healthy snack, all for FREE! Registration is required.

Sunday, January 29 – Experience Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Today’s the last day you’ll be able to celebrate the holiday season with this Peanuts classic.

January 30 – Pack your child’s lunch and bring them to GR Gymnastics for Munch-n-Move, while you enjoy some me time.

January 31- Join Once Upon a Paint Brush at Accidental Art, for story time and listen to Dragons Love Tacos while painting dragons!
