Things to do in January With Kids

Why, hello there 2018! It’s a new year and there are plenty of opportunities to make new memories while enjoying old favorites. From outdoor exploration to indoor semi-tropical settings there are places to visit for all occasions and ages.

Some of these events are only happening on a single day, while several options can be done anytime throughout the month of January (and the rest of winter).

Monday, January 1 – Enjoy hot cocoa and cookies while you create during the New Year’s Day Party at The Mud Room.

January 2 – Explore the great outdoors with all sorts of winter fun like Snowshoeing, cross country skiing, sledding, or skating at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex. Equipment rentals are available, and be sure to bundle up.

January 3 – Skate where the Griffins practice during a Lunchtime Open Skate at Griff’s House.

January 4 – Learn How To Train Your Tiger during Winter Break Camp today at John Ball Zoo. Preregistration is required.

January 5 – This weekend is your last chance to celebrate Christmas and Holiday Traditions from Around the World at Frederik Meijer Gardens.

January 6 – Experience Pokémon as never before as the Grand Rapids Symphony presents Pokémon Symphonic Evolutions at the DeVos Center.

Sunday, January 7 – Explore The Life of the Mind and participate in a Snowflake Break at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. And be sure to check out their newest exhibit, Dragons, Unicorns and Mermaids.

January 8 – Breathe, bend, and experience Yoga Storytime at Wyoming KDL. Some yoga mats are available, but if you have your own, you are encouraged to bring it.

January 9 – Let your little one learn through sensory play at the Allendale Township Library.

January 10 – Map the sky and learn to use a star chart as Ada Parks presents The Winter Night Sky. Preregistration is required, $3/adults, $2/youth.

January 11 – Kids in grades 1-5 are invited to explore wildlife biology at this month’s Evening Explorers at the Main Branch of the Grand Rapids Public Library.

January 12 – Let your littles run off energy during Toddler Time at Kangaroo Palace in Norton Shores.


January 13 – Cheer on the Grand Rapids Griffins at Night. It’s also Superhero Night, so come dressed as your favorite character and enjoy all sorts of extra activities. Be sure to use our promo code for additional savings.

Sunday, January 14Build your own secret hang out as the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum provides all you need with Just Fort Fun.

January 15  Everyone is invited to an evening Family Storytime at Walker KDL.

January 16Visit the Grand Rapids Art Museum for FREE today as a part of the Meijer Free Days every Tuesday.

January 17Meet some animal friends from the Blandford Nature Center as they visit West Side Christian School for BUDS, a free event for children birth to 5.

January 18 – Watch the classic Roald Dahl story come to life as the LowellArts Players Youth Theater presents James & the Giant Peach.

January 19 – Take a night stroll lit by torches through DeGraaf Nature Center. Hot cocoa will be provided, as will snowshoes if need be. Tickets are $3/non-members, free for members.

January 20 – Join friends from Blandford Nature Center, Outdoor Discovery Center, Casa La Parrot, and KDL for activities and crafts at the Downtown Market’s Second Annual Nature Day.

Sunday, January 21 – Support a local charity and reminisce for summer as Pronto Pup opens for one special weekend.

January 22 Take in a movie at Celebration Cinema South with their Bring The Baby Monday Matinée at 11AM.

January 23 – Kids can help Abraham Lincoln develop his character in a musical experience as Circle Theatre Presents: Honest Abe: A Character You Can Count On.

January 24 – Bring your own or borrow a demo bike and try out Fatbike Riding at Indian Trails Golf Course.

January 25Grand Haven’s annual Winterfest kicks off today. Favorite events like Glow-Bowl, Cardboard Sledding, and more are sure to keep kids of all ages having fun.

January 26 – Kids are invited to an Art & Movie Night at Lions & Rabbits. Boxes will be provided for kids to decorate as cars, and then settle into for a screening of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

January 27  – For outdoor fun head over to Mulick Park for WinterWest or stay indoors and play at the Kids & Family Expo at DeVos Place.

Sunday, January 28 Grab a sled or tube and check out some favorite spots with our Sledding Guide for thrilling winter fun.

January 29 – Splash away gray winter skies and warm up in 90-degree water at Goldfish Swim School for Family Swim.

January 30 – Tumble, jump, and flip away during Open Gym at R-Athletics.

January 31– Glide along with some indoor roller skating at the Kentwood Fun Spot.
