A Little Slice of the D in GR

*Buddy’s Pizza provided a complimentary experience for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

Honestly, I didn’t know Detroit-Style Pizza was a thing til Buddy’s Pizza landed in GR this spring. Detroit wasn’t even really on my radar for anything beyond sports til last summer when our family trecked over and found a reinvented city bursting with cool.

Stepping into Buddy’s Pizza on Friday night – the place was hopping – took me right back to the Motor City. Detroit-themed decor and menu items named after iconic Detroit locations did the trick.

It took a few minutes to decide which flavor of The Original Detroit-Style Pizza would be my first bite, but I landed on a slice of Super (Cheese, pepperoni, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and ham) followed by sneaking some of hubby’s Lake Ontario (Motor City cheese blend, fresh cilantro, Canadian bacon, grilled pineapple and Buddy’s BBQ sauce) and was glad I did.

Buddy’s Pizzas are square (4 or 8 slices) and come with the sauce on top and the pepperoni underneath. Our server mentioned that in the “old days” Buddy’s used square automotive trays as pizza pans – thus the square shape.

Pizza Night in Grand Rapids Just Got Easier

Pizza night is supposed to be easy, but when it comes to pizza in our family, it’s complicated.

We need gluten-free pizza for one kid, a sauce that everyone likes, bacon pizza, and a pizza to satisfy the girl who really doesn’t like pizza. Yeah.

As the kids tucked into their first bites of pizza, I heard surprised voices spout “This is really good pizza!” “Hey, this is the best gluten-free pizza I’ve ever had,” and “Wow! I’m coming here for my birthday!”

Hubby and I had the same thoughts.

This stuff was good and pizza night now has a new contender. His Bocce IPA and my Southside cocktail hit the spot, too. That, plus the amazing mozzarella sticks and scrumptious desserts put Buddy’s Pizza on our map.

Thankfully, Buddy’s is centrally located and not too far to swing by after work and grab take out on the way home – They’re at 4061 28th St SE  (in the old Carrabba’s building.)

Lil’ Buddy’s Menu – Just Right for Kids

The Lil’ Buddy’s menu at Buddy’s Pizza includes Grilled Cheese Fingers served with fries and your choice of fruit, applesauce or carrot sticks. Freshly Made Chicken Strips and Mac + Cheese, plus others, are also options for kids who might not be in the mood for pizza.

Buddy’s Does Birthday Parties, Plus Dine-In + Carryout Party Planning

The kids were so smitten with Buddy’s Pizza that we’re planning to come back for a birthday party. Googling mom that I am, I discovered that we have options: we can get our pizza to go or bring our party to them (all-you-can-eat per person fee) and their staff will help us figure out how much to order. You can also see your party planning choices on their online menu.
