Enjoy the Simple Things with These Free (or Nearly Free!) Activities for Kids
November is the month for giving thanks, and you will thank us for this amazing list of fun, free and affordable events! West Michigan is bursting with holiday cheer already, and you won’t want to miss out on these plentiful opportunities to enjoy it.
Check these activities and events out – you’ll find parades, a show about the stars, holiday lights galore, a celebration of Veteran’s Day, and even an opportunity for the kids to earn some cash! Do we have your attention now? If so, read on and and fill up your calendars with these free or very affordable activities.

Free or Affordable November Fun in Grand Rapids – 2018
1 – Don’t eat all that Halloween candy just yet! The kiddos can make some money AND give back during some local candy buy back programs.
2 – Calling all Christmas and space enthusiasts!? Starting in November, the Carr-Flea Planetarium will take a modern look at the Christmas story – highlighting all of the “sky signs” at the time of Jesus’ birth and looking at possible dates for the Christmas star that led the Wise Men to Jesus. Enjoy Mystery of the Christmas Star on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:00 PM.
3 – Learn about and celebrate Veteran’s Day at Kids Workshop: Helicopter at Home Depot on November 3 from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. After building their model military helicopter, kids will receive a certificate of achievement and a commemorative pin – all for FREE!
4 – Kids always love storytime at Barnes & Noble – be sure not to miss How the Grinch Stole Christmas on November 3 at 11:00 AM at the Holland, Muskegon, Rivertown and Woodland locations. And if you miss this one, there are plenty of other storytime options this month!
5 – Active duty and military veterans and their families can play at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum for free during Free Military Weekend November 9-11. Be sure to bring your military ID card!
6 – Kick off the Christmas season with these community holiday events. Enjoy fireworks, hot chocolate and treats at Santa’s Christmas Holiday Sparkle Fireworks in Sparta on November 16. On November 30, take a free carriage ride and more at Rockford’s 2018 Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

7 – Shop, see Santa, sing carols, take part in the tree lighting ceremony and more at the Holiday Open House in Downtown Holland on November 17 from 5:00-8:00 PM.
