Grand Rapids Comic-Con is Nov 9-11, 2018 at DeVos Place.
Have No Fear! Grand Rapids Comic-Con is (Almost) Here!
My child went to preschool knowing nothing about superheroes. Somehow by the end of the school year he said that when he grew up he hoped to be Batman. Of all the career options, he chose Fictional Superhero.
There is an undeniable draw for kids of all ages to superheroes, awesome illustrations, and riveting comics. If your child is interested in any of those things, you need to attend Grand Rapids Comic-Con! And if they’re under five, they get in free!
Grand Rapids Comic-Con has been around since 2013 draws quite the crowd.
Never Read a Comic? Not a Problem! GR Comic-Con is for Everyone
You don’t have to be a super-nerd to enjoy Comic-Con. There are a wide variety of big name authors, illustrators, and actors set to make appearances and sign autographs at the event.
“Anybody who has seen and enjoyed a superhero or science fiction movie will have a great time,” says Mark Hodges, owner and event coordinator for Grand Rapids Comic-Con. I think everyone could fit that criteria!
Some of the highlights for parents and kids might be:
- Kevin Eastman, the co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Shea Fontana, author of the New York Times Best Selling DC Superhero Girls graphic novels
- John Ratzenberger, character voice on every Pixar movie ever made!
- Agnes Garbowska, illustrator for many comics, including DC Superhero Girls and My Little Pony

Costumes, Legos, and a Giant Robot Keep Everyone Entertained
While you don’t have to dress up to attend GR Comic-Con, you might be in the minority if you don’t. Fans love to support their favorite characters by dressing the part. The costumes are over-the-top and out-of-this-world!
In addition to great people watching, Drew McCarthy of the Court of Nerds Podcast (and Dad to a 10 year old) wants to let parents know that, “there is plenty of stuff for kids to do there–not just stuff for you to buy for them. The Lego area is hours of fun all on its own!”
There will also be a car show featuring replicas of famous cars, a giant robot, and you can even take a stroll through the Hall of Heroes Museum. Plenty of people to meet and things to see at Grand Rapids Comic-Con!
While the entire event is relatively family-friendly, you may want to screen some events occurring later in the evening before taking young kids.
