GRPL Gives Our Kids A Better Learning Experience
Before I had my daughter, I thought that libraries were pretty much quiet places with books and shelves. Boy was I WRONG! Although books are beyond value, libraries now offer SO much more than just checking out books.
GRPL offers classes, camps, programs and special events for adults and kids. GRPL desires to come alongside parents and educators to help our kids learn and grow and have fun doing it!
GRPL’s Fall Programming is Designed for Every Age Level
While GRPL has an amazing summer reading program, its back to school programs are geared to prepare, enhance and expand upon the school experience such as offering resources to help Michigan students comply with the new 3rd Grade Reading law, and super fun STEAM story times.
“The Grand Rapids Public Library is committed to helping children grow and explore,” says Kristen Krueger-Corrado, GRPL’s Marketing and Communications Manager.
“Learning doesn’t stop when they leave the classroom and our programs and collections can really fuel a child’s curiosity.”
5 Programs You Won’t want to Miss This Fall at GRPL
This is just a taste of what you’ll find at area GRPL branches. For a full list of exciting events for kids, check their Events Calendar.
1 – STEAM Ahead Storytime
A 20 minute storytime followed by a 25 minute hands-on session focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). Preschoolers ages 3-5 will build with blocks, create art, or make something else they will love!
2 – CHAOS Lab
Toddlers and preschoolers will be able to make a huge mess (what more could they ask for??) and you won’t have to clean it up (what more could YOU ask for??) This is a monthly event and has a new theme each month.
For example, in September kids will enjoy Art Gone Wild, where they can paint with feathers and their feet! In October, they will partake in a Monstrous Mess – where the little ones can play like a little monster and make a huge mess with melting playdoh and monster soup.
3 – Evening Explorers
This monthly event focuses on hands-on STEAM activities for your elementary aged kids. If your kids love to explore, build and learn how things work, this program is for them!
Kids can check out IRL Minecraft in September – that is “In Real Life” Minecraft. Kids will learn basic coding and engineering through activities based on Minecraft…but in a real world way. There will also be an Edible Architecture session and more through December.
4 – One Book, One City for Kids
This program encourages all 5th graders in the city to read the same book at the same time – how fun is that?! GRPL teams with Grand Rapids Public Schools and gives the year’s chosen book to all 5th graders for free!
The program also involves an author meet-and-greet at the library, school visits, library programs about the book and curriculum suggestions for teachers involving the book.
5 – Mindstorm Saturdays
This popular monthly event for kids ages 10 and up allows kids to play with robotics using Lego Mindstorms kits. This drop-in, self-guided event teaches kids about robotics, coding, and problem solving.
GRPL meets you and your kids where they are. Be sure to visit the library and take full advantage of their awesome resources, books and programs to make the school year even more amazing and productive! See GRPL’s website for more information on events and programs.
