John Ball Zoo Offers Field Trips for Kids
Make learning come alive with an education program at John Ball Zoo. Live animal encounters, Michigan Science Standards aligned programming, and STEM-based lessons are available for pre-K through college.
JOHN BALL ZOO FIELD TRIP DETAILS
John Ball Zoo is home to over 250 unique animal species, from animals found in our backyards here in Michigan to endangered species found throughout the world. Teachers can choose specific, content aligned programs to make learning come alive and be more impactful for students.
John Ball Zoo offers a variety of educational programs to meet all of your needs, from self-guided zoo trips to in-depth STEM-based learning projects you can incorporate into your curriculum. Enjoy reduced or free student admission (Kent County classrooms receive free student admission) on your next trip to the Zoo. Visit our website prior to your visit to find scavenger hunts, observation exercises and more to make the most out of your trip to the Zoo.
Wild Encounters provide an opportunity to see and touch animals up close with presentations focused on your requested topic. Zoo Explorer Tours offer a guided tour of four different areas of the zoo with fun activities centered around a requested topic.
The Zoo is offering all new STEM programs for the first time ever! Penguineering is geared towards exploring the habitat of the Magellanic penguin while engaging in the engineering design process, as students take on the role of a penguin engineering their habitat.
Exhibit Design programs allow students to work through the engineering design process as they work in small groups to build a 3-D model for a specific zoo animal. Students are introduced to the process involved in selecting and building a new exhibit at the zoo.
Exhibit and Enrichment Design Challenges can be customized for 3rd – 12th grades and make the student the engineer, helping animals while learning about adaptations, habitat, animal welfare, math, and much more. Design a new toy for the spider monkeys in an enrichment design challenge or create a world class river otter exhibit in an exhibit design challenge.
