KDL is Going to Show us What the STEM/STEAM Hype is About!

Everyone keeps talking about the STEM/STEAM movement but I didn’t understand its impact until my 5 year old came home from school raving about STEM class. It’s easily his favorite part of school; he can’t get enough of it!

STEM is an educational curriculum that combines science, technology, engineering, and math into one cohesive, hands-on subject. STEAM also includes art in the curriculum.

Kent District Library will be showcasing a variety of STEAM experiences at their KDL Lab Experience Extravaganza on November 16 and 17. They’ll be partnering with local STEAM experts to provide hours of challenges and pure STEAM fun.

Kids can Engage with STEAM at Nearly Every KDL Branch

Did you know that 18 out of the 19 Kent District Library branches now have in-branch Lab Experiences? KDL Lab Experience promotes creativity and problem solving skills through a collaboration of programs and services.

These programs are mostly student-driven projects that are aligned with schools’ curriculum. This gives students the opportunity to relate what they learn in class to hands-on experience of applying the concepts in real life. KDL strives to be a key partner in this exciting trend.

The upcoming Lab Experience Extravaganza is KDL’s way of saying “thank you” to the community by providing a time and place for patrons to experience all they have to offer under one roof.

Show Your Child Local STEAM Leaders and What it Looks Like as a Career

Over the course of the two days of the Lab Experience Extravaganza, kids will have the opportunity to hear from some talented STEM/STEAM leaders in the community such as:

  • The Director of Science for the Grand Rapids Public Museum, Dr. Stephanie Ogren, will be at the event discussing her role as a woman in field that’s primarily populated with men. She’s a true success story and she’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
  • The West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology (WMCAT) will also be at the event demonstrating live screen-printing techniques–how cool! WMCAT is a nationally-recognized leader in creative youth development and adult workforce development–focusing on technology and the arts. They’ll be answering audience questions and printing KDL lab t-shirts.
  • The East Grand Rapids Robotics Team will be around showing off their robots as they practice for their next competition.
