Grab Your Bookbag, Library Card, and the Kids Because the Best Part of Summer is Here — the Summer Reading Program at KDL!

I’m a pretty laid back summer mom. I let the break from school give us a chance to breathe and relax. And that goes for our routine, too. But one activity I’m happy to stick with? Our weekly library visits.

Our weekly library routine is something the whole family is on board with – from my teen to my kindergarteners. And the cherry on top of our library visits is hands-down, the KDL Summer Reading Program!

We all get rewarded just for signing up and reading, which is a huge win in my book.

Stick with me for some easy ways to keep your kids reading all summer long.

How to Make It Fun for Kids to ‘Hit the Books’ Even When It’s Summer

Let’s face it — summer can be a busy time but Kris Vogelar, Youth Specialist at the KDL Grandville Branch, says “The KDL Summer Program is designed to keep the brain active!

We like for the kids to have active brains so that when they start school in the fall they haven’t fallen behind and are ready to hit the ground running.”

So with that in mind, here are a few ways to make reading happen June through August.

  • Pick a weekly library day. Check out books every week to help set your kids up for success. Having new books to choose from always gets my kids excited for reading time!
  • Sign everyone up for the Summer Reading Program because, psssst…there are prizes, including a drawing to get your very own iPad mini!
  • Find books that pique your kid’s interest. Easier said than done, you say? Chat with a librarian! Kris says “We’re at the ready to help parents identify good-fit books for their kids based on where they are at and what they are interested in.”
  • Make a bucket list of unique places to read and see how many you check off. Read in a hammock, on a picnic blanket at the park, or in a blanket fort with a flashlight.
  • Join in the weekly reading activities and programs.

“Here at Grandville, we have programs almost every day. It’s a busy, happening place to be!” says Kris.

Activities from Storytime to Ruff Readers are interactive and engaging. And you won’t want to miss the special magic shows, juggling, storytelling, and live animal programs too!

Jump Into the KDL Summer Reading Program

The Reading Program kicks off on June 3 and ends August 10. To start, swing by any KDL Branch (there are 19 of them!) or online starting May 28 to get a Reading Log.

There are four age groups: Babies (Younger than 2), Youth (Ages 2-10), Teen (Ages 11-17), and Adult (Age 18+). Each group has different goals to be able to complete the Program and snag your prize. You can get all the details here.

Starting July 2, you can stop into the library to claim your prizes! Prizes for Youth and Teens include a free book and coupons (while supplies last) from local businesses. Everyone who finishes is entered into a drawing for the chance to get one of 10 iPad minis.

If you’re looking for an extra challenge, this year KDL is introducing the Super Reader Challenge for Youth and Teens. Read more or earn additional points and you get another entry for the iPad mini drawing!
