Today we are joined again by Grand Rapids blogger, grkids mom and Adventurer Extraodinaire, Nedra McDaniel.

Nedra has a taste for adventure that just can’t be quenched. We’re happy to have her share her family & mom adventures with us from time to time on grkids.com. Today Nedra and her boys tell us about Surfing Lake Michigan.  Welcome back, Nedra!

With the high temperatures we’ve had this summer, you can either beat the heat indoors or the make the most of it by going to the water. Our family opted to try out some stand up paddleboard rentals from Wet Mitten Surf Shop in Grand Haven.

Wet Mitten also rents surf, skim and boogie boards. There are several different types of boards available for sale if you discover that you really enjoy it.

For a small fee, Wet Mitten will deliver your paddle or surf board to the Grand Haven area. We decided to check out Grand Haven’s North Beach Park. The county park is $4 for Ottawa County residents and $6 for non residents. The cost was worth it to be at a beach that was way less crowded than the state park.

Store owner Ben, gave us a brief instructional lesson on how to use the board. I have taken lessons before and I really don’t feel a full lesson is necessary. The concept is pretty simple so what Ben gave us was just perfect.

You want to stand with your feet centered in the middle of the black part of the board or near the handle hold hole depending on your board.

Your paddle height should be about as tall as you can reach.

You also use a strap around your ankle so that the board doesn’t get away from you if you fall.

It’s easiest to get up on the board knees first and then stand up.

My older son, who is 9, got up pretty easily.

My younger son who is 6, was not really strong enough to handle the board on his own, but he was super content to be a passenger.

After a while we learned that the paddleboard could double as a surf board. That’s when our fun went to another level.

We had a blast trying to surf the little waves.

It’s comforting to know that nothing in the water can attack you in comparison to being at the bottom of the food chain when you surf in the ocean. I was also relieved that the water temps were surprisingly pleasant.

I was so excited to get to try surfing by myself too. It was so much fun and gave me a small scale taste for what it would be like. My oldest son even got comfortable enough to move his feet while traveling on the board.

Ben got to step out of the office and hang out with us for a bit and demonstrated how to do a headstand. We weren’t quite ready for that yet but it was fun to watch.

Our family had a blast and I was really impressed with shop owner Ben’s enthusiasm to share his passion with others. I highly recommend checking out Wet Mitten Surf Shop if you want to try something new with your family or just want an excuse to play in the water.

Depending on how many family members you have, you could rent a few boards and take turns. Reservations for rentals are highly recommended.
