Explore Grand Rapids’ Winter Wonderland!
The thought of cold Michigan winters got you down? Think again! Grand Rapids has tons of exciting things to do in the winter months, and here’s your chance to give your whole family something to look forward to: the Winter Adventure Camps at West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES).
You and your family can explore the wintry world through these one-day evening camps that combine family time with exploration, learning, and fun. This year WMAES is offering three exciting classes, detailed below–choose one or choose all!
1. Animal Adaptations in the Winter
Thursday, January 19 | 5:30-7:00 PM
Learn how animals adapt to Michigan winters. Check out animal skins, furs and skulls and warm up beside a roaring fire in the forest. Participants will get to mimic the snowshoe hare as they snowshoe out to the forest, weather permitting. Pre-registration required by January 16, 2017.
2. Howl at the Moon Hike
Thursday, February 9 | 5:30-7:00 PM
Explore the ecosystems while learning the different phases of the moon. Play some moonlight tag along the way! There will be a roaring campfire in the woods to warm up by while sipping hot cocoa. Pre-registration required by February 6, 2017.
3. Makin’ Maple Syrup
Thursday, March 9 | 6:00-7:30 PM
Families will learn the history of making syrup while watching the boiling process, tapping trees and, of course, tasting a variety of syrups! Families will snowshoe to the maple forest, weather permitting. Pre-registration required by March 6, 2017.
It’s not too early to sign-up for these popular, affordable classes; in fact, registration fills up fast so secure your spot while there’s still space! All camps are open to children of all ages; children under the age of 12, however, must be accompanied by an adult. The cost for each camp is only $3 for children and $5 for adults. Pre-registration is required for all events. Click here to register now!
The Winter Adventure Camps are also a great way to get a taste of what learning can look like year-round at West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science.
WMAES is a tuition-free PreK-12 charter school, ranked in the top ten in Michigan. Students supplement traditional schooling with hand-on experiences in nature and special classroom teaching about environmental topics such as water sampling, bird watching, and plant identification, just to name a few.
If you’ve already got a school you love, or are just looking for something fun and new to do with the family this winter, the Winter Adventure Camps are for you! Your whole family will learn to appreciate winter with new eyes and experience the special joy of learning about nature, in nature.
