Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is proud to welcome the 25th year of the Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming. This year, over 60 species of butterflies from Asia, Africa, and Central & South America, will take flight in the warm, lush environment of the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. See thousands of butterflies as they flutter and fly, come to rest on feeding stations and flowers, and congregate around stream beds.

The 19th century was an era of discovery. This year’s theme, Into the Glass House, will highlight horticulture displays, butterflies, moths and caterpillars in and under glass. Offering a look into the history of how Dr. Nathaniel Ward pursued a discovery of keeping plants in miniature green houses, which he named fern houses, and which are now known as Wardian cases or terrariums. Learn more about the Wardian case and terrariums from miniature to five stories tall.

Look for the Observation Station, where you can witness the transformation as butterflies emerge from chrysalises and cocoons to stretch their wings and learn to fly.

Also visit the monarch caterpillar display in the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse, where you can see striped, monarch caterpillars munching on milkweed. See if you can spot their chrysalises.

Throughout the exhibition, there is special educational programming and the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offers butterfly-themed activities. Activities vary daily, so check at the information center for more details.

Don’t miss Tuesday Night Lights, where you can bring a flashlight and hunt for butterflies with us. Tuesdays until 9 pm.
