Free Forest School has come to Grand Rapids!
Run by volunteers, Free Forest School groups host free events where young children (birth to age 6) and their parents or caregivers meet to explore and play together in nature. Free Forest School groups are welcoming and non-judgmental communities in which parents and caregivers can practice giving children space and autonomy to explore and create in nature.
Free Forest School of Grand Rapids meets weekly throughout the year at nearby wilderness areas. We share a snack, take a hike, play in nature, and sing and read at circle time. Parents get a chance to unplug and step back… Kids and their imaginations take the lead!
Make sure to join our group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/FreeForestSchoolGrandRapidsMI/
All kids 0-6 are welcome (older siblings welcome as well) and will have the freedom to play as they wish.
We will meet at the entrance off of Aberdeen St. NE near the trail to the right of the parking lot. Here’s a link to the exact location: http://bit.ly/huffpark2
We will meet for a shared snack and time to connect at 9:30am, and be ready to depart for base camp at 10am. Please bring a peanut-free snack to share. Good ideas are: Cut up fruit/veggies, cheese, popcorn, crackers- this should be simple and not intimidating! We head out to base camp at 10 am.
We’ll take a walk, play and explore, have circle time around 11, then explore some more and have a picnic lunch for those who can stay.
Here are a few things you should know:
-There is a shallow creek here so dress accordingly if you plan on going in.
-Dress for the weather and be prepared to get dirty and wet – bring a change of clothes for kiddos (leave in car or carry with you). This trail can be overgrown, so closed shoes – boots/sneakers – and pants may be preferable.
-Bring a ground blanket or tarp to use during circle time, as well as water and snacks. We will also bring a large tarp to share.
-Leave toys, dogs, and strollers at home, please
-Limit camera and cell phone use
-Feel free to bring a book, song, activity, or story to share at circle time, your facilitators are always happy to have help!
