Cedar Springs, Rockford, Belmont with Kids
Contributions from Nichole Kladder and Betsy B.
On the north side of the Grand Rapids suburbs you will find the wonderful community of Rockford.
Aside from the awesome festivals and celebrations Rockford hosts, the town also boasts great playgrounds, cute shops, incredible eateries and restaurants, a good farmers’ market, and a great boardwalk along the Rogue River. They often host concerts in the park during the summer, too.
Read on to discover all the fun things to see and do in Rockford!
Rockford has a good Farmer’s Market (54 S Main St) on Saturdays from May through the end of October. It’s wider, more spread out and less crowded than others which makes it easy to maneuver with a stroller. There are multiple vendors offering a plethora of fresh produce, baked goods and other items.
You’ll likely walk away with fresh flowers, squash, and apples given the time of year.
Don’t forget your cash for payment! Some vendors do take cards, but cash is quicker.
Plan for time to walk along the Rockford Dam Overlook. This is such a cool view of the Rouge River! There are a couple dams and some trout, too. A trail goes around the whole thing for a lovely walk, complete with benches to stop and take a rest. Or have a snack.
Rockford has a handful of adorable shops including secondhand clothing and furniture stores and children’s boutiques.
A team favorite is Aunt Candy’s Toy Company. Actually run by ‘Aunt Candy’ (below, on left), this wonderful little shop (63 Courtland St) boasts hard-to-find specialty toys, long-time favorites, and offers special orders. Bonus: a small play area where kids aged five and under can try out some of the toys!
After hitting the stores, stop for a bite to eat at one of the restaurants downtown. Grab a hot dog at The Dam Dogs ( 25 N Squires Street Square NE, great for a quick in and out) or The Corner Bar (31 N Main St) and don’t miss the cupcakes at Arnie’s Bakery (34 S Squires St Square).
If you’re visiting between meals, consider getting ice cream for a snack. Rockford has two great places for ice cream and we can never decide which one we like better.
Rocky’s (110 N Main St.) has been in Rockford forever and has a constant line of customers during the summer months (they are closed in the winter).
Though their prices are just a touch higher, Custard By the Dam (25 N Squires Street Square NE) is open year round. There is also a fantastic fudge and candy shop inside the store. When we eat at Custard By the Dam, we like to enjoy our treats by the water–it’s conveniently right out their backdoor.
No matter how much time you have to spend in Rockford, you can be sure that you will have a fun, memorable experience!
