Q&A with Aquinas College Summer Programs

What makes your camp stand out from the rest?

Aquinas College Summer Camps: Where curiosity meets confidence — and learning feels like an adventure!

At Aquinas, campers don’t just participate — they create, explore, perform, design, and lead!

Whether your child is a jazz enthusiast eager to learn the fundamentals, explore big bands, and even arrange an original composition, or a budding scientist ready to tackle hands-on engineering challenges like building a marble roller coaster or designing a toothpick bridge that can hold impressive weight — AQ camps turn big ideas into real-world experiences.

For imaginative minds, our Roleplay Gaming Adventure offers something magical: campers become the heroes of their own stories.

Guided by experienced “Dungeon Masters,” they build entire fantasy worlds while developing creativity, collaboration, storytelling skills, and problem-solving abilities — all through interactive play.

Our sports camps bring the same energy and excellence to the field and court. Under the guidance of experienced coaches, athletes of all ages build skills, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Whether your child is just starting out or refining competitive skills, AQ sports camps focus on growth, encouragement, and fun.

And it all takes place on Aquinas College’s beautiful 107-acre wooded campus, just minutes from downtown Grand Rapids.

Our park-like setting provides more than scenery, it creates a safe, nurturing environment where exploration happens both indoors and outdoors.

Campers learn in college labs, perform in inspiring spaces, and enjoy the natural beauty that makes Aquinas feel welcoming and secure.

What truly sets Aquinas apart is our people. Experienced faculty, coaches, and camp directors are passionate about mentoring young learners.

They foster inclusion, encouragement, and growth — helping each camper build skills, confidence, friendships, and independence. At AQ Summer Camps, children and teens don’t just try something new.

They discover what they’re capable of.

If a parent peeked in midweek, what would they see happening?

If a parent stopped by midweek, they would witness a campus alive with curiosity, collaboration, and joy!

In the music halls, students might be improvising in a jazz combo, listening to recordings, or experimenting with their own arrangements, smiling as their ensemble comes together.

In science and engineering camps, kids could be measuring, testing, and refining marble roller coasters, building toothpick bridges, or conducting experiments that spark “aha” moments at every turn.

Across campus, roleplay gaming campers could be deeply immersed in fantasy quests, brainstorming strategies, crafting storylines, and working together to solve puzzles and overcome challenges.

On the athletic fields and courts, campers would be seen practicing drills, competing in friendly matches, learning new techniques, and cheering on teammates with enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

Parents would also notice the spirit of mentorship and support — faculty, staff, and camp directors moving among campers, encouraging questions, celebrating discoveries, and guiding hands-on learning.

The energy is infectious: laughter, concentration, cheers, and applause fill the air, blending exploration, skill-building, and creativity.

Campers are fully engaged, confident, and having a blast while building friendships, independence, and real-world skills — all within the safe, inspiring, and naturally beautiful environment of Aquinas College.

What’s one thing parents always thank you for at pickup?

Parents consistently express their gratitude for the confidence, growth, and joy their children demonstrate at pickup.

Many campers arrive on the first day a little shy, unsure, or hesitant to try new activities. By the end of the week, parents often remark on how much their child has blossomed.

Whether that means performing a jazz solo, solving a challenging engineering problem, scoring their first goal, or taking the lead in a roleplay adventure.

Families also frequently thank us for the personal attention and encouragement campers receive. Our dedicated faculty, staff, and coaches take the time to recognize each child’s effort, celebrate successes, and help them push past small challenges.

Parents appreciate seeing how friendly, supportive, and engaging the camp environment is, which allows their child to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

Another common note of appreciation is for the camp’s safe, structured, and nurturing environment.

Parents feel confident knowing their child is fully supervised on our beautiful 107-acre campus, engaged in meaningful learning activities, and supported in building friendships, teamwork, and independence.

By the end of camp, families often remark on how their child has gained new skills, made friends, and developed pride in their accomplishments, leaving with memories and experiences that last well beyond the summer.
