Cash for Moms & Babies Program Comes to GR 49507 Zip Code
Listen up, 49507 families!
If you’re expecting a baby this summer or beyond, we have good news for you: Beginning July 1, Rx Kids expands to the 49507 zip code in Kent County.
It’s the nation’s first community-wide cash program for pregnant moms and babies, and is designed to support moms and babies during pregnancy and a baby’s first months of life, which are highlighted as the most financially vulnerable period for many families.
The support is unconditional cash, intended for essentials like diapers, formula, food, rent, transportation to prenatal care, and other baby‑related costs.

How it Helps Families in 49507
Eligible families in 49507 will receive $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 per month for the first 6 months of a child’s life.
Who Qualifies. The fine print is refreshingly short. You need to live in 49507, be at least 16 weeks pregnant when you enroll, and your baby has to be born on or after July 1, 2026, to qualify for 49507 Rx Kids.
If your application is accepted, the money is yours to put toward whatever your family actually needs: diapers, formula, food, rent, gas to your prenatal appointments, you name it. (49507 Rx Kids Enrollment opens July 1, 2026)
About Rx Kids
Rx Kids is a program led by Michigan State University that started in Flint in 2024.
This summer’s expansion brings it to 20 new communities, pushing the program to 60+ communities statewide and reaching more than 23,000 births a year.
Just under 650 babies are born in 49507 every year, and a chunk of change like this right at the start can make a huge impact on those first months of life.
It’s only possible because community organizations stepped up and partnered to make it happen.
The 49507 communities had to apply through an open application process and demonstrate the area has high need (Medicaid birth rates, child poverty, maternal and infant health indicators), provide local match funding, and supply a Community Champion along with demonstrating community interest.
They did this, and now the program can start this summer.
The thank you list includes a long list of local heavy hitters chipping in, including the State of Michigan, Amway, the City of Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Heart of West Michigan United Way, Lake Michigan Credit Union, the Steelcase, Wege, Jandernoa, KRW, and Cook Foundations, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
First Steps Kent is the local Community Champion making sure word gets out, among other things.
