Places to Find Young 5’s Now that Many Public Schools Don’t Offer It

Grand Rapids Young Fives programs are important to many families so we’ve rounded up a list of Private and Charter schools that are offering it for your child!

Young 5’s. Development Kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten. Pre-Kindergarten. Whatever you call it, these programs have been a life saver for many families who have a child who isn’t ready to make the transition from preschool to kindergarten in the fall.

My daughters loved their young fives programs and I loved that they were getting a small taste of kindergarten so that they could ease into the all-day, every day rigor of elementary school. Young Fives offers a little more structure than preschool, and their curriculum guides your child to kindergarten readiness.

Over the last few years, many public schools have stopped offering Young 5’s (some still do, however most of them are all day, every day–so check your local school district to find out your options). Many families have turned to Private and Charter schools for Young 5’s and below is a list of options in the area.

We’ve rounded up all of your area preschool options in our gigantic GRKIDS preschool guide if you decided another year of preschool is a better option for your child.

Do you know of a Grand Rapids area Charter or Private school offering a Young 5’s program that is not listed below? Please let us know in the comments.

Creative PlayStation Christian Preschool in Allegan has a wonderful Y5s program (MWF 1/2 days). My son was starting to read before Kindergarten with their program! Zion Christian in Byron Center also has a Y5 program (2 full-days/wk).

Dutton Christian School has a Young 5’s Kindergarten (5 half-days) in addition to a progressive Kindergarten (starts with a MWF schedule, then adds Tuesdays mid year, before eventually adding Thursdays as well).

Could you please make a list like this that includes the public schools in the area which do still offer a young 5s program? That would be much more helpful than telling us to call our local districts.

I wish you had included traditional public schools who offer this as well instead of directing people to call their own school district. Many people would be grateful for that information.

I look forward to seeing this list for 2016-2017. I can tell already that my daughter will be bored in Preschool again next year, yet she misses the kindergarten cutoff by 9 days. I wish the school systems still had young 5s for next year.

PS. You need to remove the link to Grace Episcopal because it links to a mild virus for your browser! I just spent the last twenty minutes figuring how to get out of it! Not good…

I encourage you to look into charter schools (National Heritage Academies). I know for certain that some of them still have young 5’s. Ridge Park Charter Academy off of East Paris near 28th street is rated number 2 of all the NHA schools and they still offer a young 5’s program. Now is the time to look into a program for next year. NHA schools are tuition free.
Thank you for the head’s up on Grace Episcopal. They are looking into it.

St. Mark Lutheran Preschool on 52nd Street in Kentwood has a morning Young 5’s program. We call the children “Bridge Kids.” If desired the Young 5’s can stay all day for 3 or 5 afternoons in order have lunch, recess and learning stations with the small Kindergarten class.
